MOTIVATION BEHIND
THE OAXACA PROJECT

We are educators, students, and artists, who believe that a deeper understanding of culture will help dispel some of the fears that are driving this world apart. Embark on a transformative journey in Oaxaca, Mexico! Join us for a week of cultural immersion, education, and lasting impact by interacting with local communities. Secure your spot now for an unforgettable adventure!

GET INVOLVED:

  • Learn the full process of making Alebrijes in an artisan community before they go to market. Have a 2 hour session with a Master Painter and try your hand at the art!

  • Engage with a community of women who are Traditional Healers in a town near Sierra Norte. Also learn about the work with their communities.

  • Try your hand at Candle Making. We will go to Teotitlan del Valle to the home of a family of candle makers who will show the full process of candle making and the significance in various rituals in Mexican culture. 

  • Unleash your creativity at a Clay Art workshop. Learn about crafting Adobe Bricks for traditional houses during our excursion to San Juan Mixtepec.

  • Experience the Black Clay Pottery in San Bartolo Coyotepec.

  • Interact with other participants, including educators, students, artists and local community members. Learn the art of Home-Made Paper, technology, writing and be part of our inclusive Experiential Curriculum creation Project!

  • Enjoy Exquisite Oaxacan Cuisine and get a chance to learn how to make traditional Mexican meals.

EXCURSIONS:

  • Visit the communities of Tlacolula, and Tlacochahuaya to see the Special Sunday only markets where you will see the tradition of "Trueque'' (trading) goods amongst each other.

  • Explore the rich mining history of San Juan Mixtepec with a personal guided tour including a visit to newly created Community Mining Museum.

  • Be awe struck at HIERVE EL AGUA - The famous mineralized water springs on the top of a mountain.

  • Visit MITLA, Mixtec archeological sites, and also some small magical towns.

  • Get a guided tour to Monte Alban.

  • Trek In the natural park Sierra Norte.

  • See the spectacular glass El Mirador observation tower.

ABOUT THE ACCOMMODATIONS AND TOUR COMPANY:

We will spend 7 nights in the stunning El Comalito (home of singer Lila Downs). Our guides, Yarima and Luis of Mundo Maya Tours are licensed bilingual (Spanish and English) Mexican tour guides who have led cultural and educational  expeditions for more than 25 years (since 1997), around México, and other countries in Central and South America. We are proud to have them be our guides for this week-long exploration. 

KEY DETAILS & LOGISTICS

Dates: February 15-22, 2025

Airport: Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) 

Cost: $2000 per person based on double occupancy; $500 reduction per couple for room with one king sized bed. 

Included: all accommodations (7 nights in El Comalito, a 10 minute walk from the city center)

7 dinner meals (or equivalent) and water; transportation in air-conditioned vehicle;

Experienced Bilingual tour guides; all entrance fees and event/speaker fees; transfer to OAX (two available times)

Not Included: Travel insurance (proof of or liability waiver required), airfare to/from OAX, transfer ($10 to city Airbnb – shared van is easily available at airport), drinks (other than water), other meals (options available), incidentals (souvenirs, etc.). If unsure, please ask!
